Recommended route: 8 days / 7 nights
| Base | Nights | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Edinburgh | 3 | Historic Scotland, major sights and museums |
| Inverness | 2 | Base for Loch Ness and the Highlands |
| Glasgow | 2 | Architecture, museums, food and an easy final city stop |
This gives you three contrasting places without trying to cover the islands, the far north and the western Highlands in one short trip.

A workable pattern would be:
- Friday, 4 June 2027: depart Singapore
- Saturday, 5 June: arrive Edinburgh
- Saturday, 12 June: depart Glasgow
- Or depart Sunday, 13 June if you want eight full days rather than counting the arrival and departure days.
Day-by-day itinerary
| Day | Programme | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 – Edinburgh arrival | Check in and keep the afternoon easy. Walk part of the Royal Mile, explore Victoria Street and Grassmarket, and finish at Calton Hill if you still have energy. | Edinburgh |
| 2 – Historic Edinburgh | Edinburgh Castle in the morning; then St Giles’ Cathedral, the Royal Mile and the Real Mary King’s Close. Allow time simply to explore the Old Town rather than rushing between attractions. | Edinburgh |
| 3 – Museums and city views | National Museum of Scotland, New Town and Princes Street Gardens. Choose either the easier Calton Hill walk or the longer Arthur’s Seat walk depending on the weather. | Edinburgh |
| 4 – Edinburgh to Inverness | Take a late-morning direct train north through Perthshire and the Cairngorms. After checking in, walk beside the River Ness and visit the Inverness Castle Experience if time permits. | Inverness |
| 5 – Loch Ness and the Highlands | Take a guided excursion covering Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle and a loch cruise. Some tours also include Fort Augustus, Falls of Foyers and Dores Beach. | Inverness |
| 6 – Inverness to Glasgow | Take a late-morning or lunchtime direct train. Settle in, then explore George Square, Buchanan Street and Merchant City. | Glasgow |
| 7 – Glasgow | Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow Botanic Gardens and the West End. Later, visit Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis, or enjoy the city’s food and music scene. | Glasgow |
| 8 – Departure | For a later flight, visit the Burrell Collection or Riverside Museum before heading to Glasgow Airport. | Flight home |
Edinburgh’s principal sights include the Castle, Arthur’s Seat, the Old Town and Calton Hill, while Glasgow is particularly strong in museums, architecture, music and dining.
Inverness works well as a compact Highland base. VisitScotland specifically recommends it for exploring Loch Ness, castles, scenery and wildlife, and there are full-day Loch Ness excursions departing from the city.

Places "I" would not squeeze into this trip
I would leave the Isle of Skye, Fort William/Jacobite train, Islay and the North Coast 500 for another visit. Skye in particular deserves at least two nights; including it here would introduce long coach or driving days and make the trip feel like a transit exercise.
For this first visit, Edinburgh + Inverness + Glasgow gives you the strongest combination of iconic Scotland, Highland scenery and enjoyable city time without needing to drive.
